Nothing could separate Barcelona and Real Madrid after the two giants of Spanish football went head-to-head in the Spanish Copa del Rey semi-final 1st leg.
The Camp Nou was stunned into silence after Real Madrid took the lead in the sixth minute through Lucas Vazquez following a sensational assist from Frenchman Karim Benzema.
Vazquez showed composure as he slotted the ball past ter Stegen and gave Real Madrid something to hold on to.
The holders Barcelona, who started the match without Lionel Messi, had struggled to cause any issues for the Madrid defence. This was despite the efforts of a bright and hungry Malcom.
The young Brazilian kept plugging away and in the 57th minute he was rewarded for his efforts with a goal to bring the tie level.
Malcom’s goal certainly sets up a mouth-watering second leg that will take place on February 27th at the Bernabeu.
Young Brazilians shine
Malcom wasn’t the only young Brazilian to take to the field during el clásico. 18-year-old Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior also took centre stage.
Vinicius, who joined from Flamengo for £38.7m in 2018 caused plenty of problems for the Barcelona defence with his electric pace and dribbling. The youngster played his part in the Real Madrid goal. He delivered a teasing cross from the left-hand-side to the feet of fellow teammate Benzema, who calmly passed to Vazquez for a simple finish.
Junior also had more shots (four) in the first half than the entire Barcelona team. For an 18-year-old he definitely didn’t look out of place on the pitch of Camp Nou.
More to come
This was the first of three clásico meetings in less than four weeks. Real Madrid were much improved from their 5-1 mauling the last time the sides met in October.
The second leg at the Bernabeu has everything to play for. Fans around the globe cannot wait to get their teeth into another clash between these two behemoths.
