Assessing Liverpool’s Title Challenge

Title

Tom Cecil provides an insight into Liverpool’s squad. They are currently 1st in the Premier League, 9 points clear of 2nd place, and it looks as if they will win the league.

Jurgen Klopp’s fanatic obsession with the high press and overlapping full-backs has worked wonders for the Merseyside red men. Klopp will now be looking to secure his first trophy in English football.

This article will feature a quick review on each player, followed by a score of their season so far.

Allison Becker – 9/10

The Brazilian shot stopper has adapted exceptionally well to Premier League football following his big summer from from AS Roma. He’s the stereotypical “perfect” goalkeeper in football terms today.

Very good with his hands and kicking is not a problem for him. He consistently performs well and can hit 60/70 yard passes with sublime accuracy to his teammates. He’s kept Liverpool in many games this season, notably in the Champions League with his last minute save against Napoli.

Trent Alexander Arnold – 8/10

The young, English right-back is an outstanding talent and was in contention for “Golden boy” for 2018, narrowly missing out on the prize to Kylian Mbappe. He has a mean delivery and elusive pace to get him into attacking positions which turn out to be deadly for his teammates.

Joe Gomez – 8.5/10

Another young Englishmen who is flourishing under Klopp. He looks so calm and comfortable on the ball, especially because of the influence Virgil Van Dijk has on him. He’s injured at the moment, but, when he’s back, he will no doubt be straight back into the fold when he returns.

Virgil Van Dijk – 10/10

Wow. Need I say more about this man. In my opinion, he’s the best defender in the world and we see week in and week about the qualities that he possesses. NEVER fails to impress.

Andrew Robertson – 9/10

The Scotsman has really developed into a World Class left-back since his arrival from Hull City. Constantly up and down the left flank and is a threat in an attacking and defensive sense. He’s a forwards dream when he crosses the ball into the danger area in and around the 6-18 yard box.

James Milner – 8/10

Criminally underrated. The work he does for the team is valuable and his defensive discipline is what allows the likes of Salah to express themselves higher up the pitch.

Gini Wijnaldum – 7.5/10

The box-to-box player who contributes goals too. Great signing from Newcastle United. Coming into his prime now, he’s not the player that fans rave about but he’s the player that the team needs.

Fabinho – 7/10

The Brazilian defensive midfielder keeps things ticking in the middle of the park and has a great range of passing. Questions were asked of him as he doesn’t look to be performing at the level he should be for a man on such a high wage and price tag, however, he is starting to come into his own and looks a lot more relaxed and composed on the ball in comparison to what he was like when he first arrived at Melwood.

Mo Salah – 9/10

The Egyptian King. Pace, skill, finesse, work rate, the man has it all. He’s another player who plays a pivotal role in this free flowing side and scores goals for fun.

Sadio Mane – 8/10

The Senegalese international is having another good season. He would be the first to admit that he’s not hitting the goals and assists numbers that he would like to, but still performs consistently well.

Roberto Firmino – 8/10

Firmino, who plays as a ST or CF has a free role in this team to either make runs in behind defences or dropping deep and collecting the ball to feed his teammates. Scored a few “no look goals” yet again this season!
