Since arriving in the summer for a reported £26.4m, an absolute steal in today’s market, Lucas Torreira has put in a string of impressive performances. He seems to have benefited Arsenal massively.
But what makes Torreira such an impactful figure? I will explore what he brings to the team in this article.
Last season in the Serie A for Sampdoria, and so far this season for Arsenal, the little Uruguayan has shown his immense defensive abilities. He made 198 tackles in the Serie A last season, with a win percentage of 68.2%, the highest of the three players who made over 100 tackles. He also won 174 fouls, and made 158 interceptions, brilliant stats for a defensive midfielder.
In comparison to his, now, Arsenal compatriots, last season Torreira averaged 2.8 tackles and 2.0 interceptions per 90. This compares very favourably to Granit Xhaka’s 2.0 tackles and 1.0 interceptions. A defensive midfielder, who can break up play like Torreira can, is what Arsenal have been crying out for so many years.
So far in the Premier league Torreira has shown these defensive abilities very well. In his 5 starts and 5 appearances off the bench so far this season, Torreira has made 18 tackles, 17 interceptions, 9 clearances and an impressive 58 recoveries.
With more blocks, interceptions and one less tackle in nearly 300 less minutes than N’golo Kante, a man who has cemented himself as one of the best, if not the best defensive midfielder in the world over the last few years, it really is no surprise Arsenal fans are excited about having this man on their team.
Not Bad Going Forward Either
Torreira is a typical defensive midfielder, strong in the tackle, putting his body on the line, but he actually is decent in attack also. He scored 4 goals last season, which is not bad at all. This is also more than Elneny and Xhaka who managed 1 each. He only managed 1 assist, but has already levelled that this season for Arsenal, with a nice ball to Lacazette who finished the game-winner for Arsenal against Cardiff. Torreira also has a surprisingly good long ball on him. He managed 87.2% ball accuracy last year, pipping Xhaka to the post, a man who is renowned for his passing ability. The ability to also restart attacks for Arsenal, after ending other team’s ones, is a gift that Arsenal needed. They will surely cherish him in his spot at the core of their team.
One For Many Years To Come
Already, Torreira has already shown how vital he will be for the club this season. He represents a brilliant bit of business for the Arsenal transfer team. With such a low fee in today’s game, Arsenal fans will no doubt be over the moon with the Uruguayan. And, at the young age of still just 22, Torreira is sure to be an absolute force for Arsenal in the coming years. This is, however, providing that they can keep hold of him.
