Mexican boxing talent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has just signed a mega-money deal to become the highest paid sportsperson in the world.
Alvarez has reportedly agreed to an 11-fight deal worth a minimum of $365million, or £278million.
The 25-year-old’s new deal is going to last a duration of five years, according to reports, and is with the sports streaming service DAZN. DAZN has started to become a big player in their industry over the last couple of years. Before this deal, they had already added Anthony Joshua as one of their partners.
The Mexican boxer, who boasts a record of 50-1-2, 34 KOs, has a huge following in America. His following is particularly large within the Hispanic community, which always draws big numbers.
His only defeat came against Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in 2013. Since then, he has seen almost all of his matches been regularly shown on Pay-Per-View.
The deal is also thought to benefit his promoters, Golden Boy Promotions. Former boxing superstar, Oscar De La Hoya, is the owner of Golden Boy.
It is understood that they have received a license fee to broadcast a number of their cards each year on the DAZN network.
Canelo defeated Gennady Golovkin (GGG) in September with a majority decision in which many called one of the best fights of 2018. He will now be preparing to step up a weight and defend his WBA super-middleweight title, against Rocky Fielding.
