It has been two weeks since the final of Frances’ World Cup win, and despite the French proving they’re the worlds best, there were many countries who came out proud, with many players performing brilliantly on the world stage.
Players that come to mind are the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Harry Kane, Thibaut Cortouis or Antoinne Greizmann. One man who got the fans talking was Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, who helped England successfully reach the semi-final stage in Russia.
Manchester United have been linked with the 25-year-old defender since his heroics at the World Cup. There has been rumours that Maguire is looking to challenge himself at a bigger club, and he believes he should be playing at the highest level.
Several sources have said that Maguire believes he will be playing for Manchester United next season.
Jose Mourinho has said he needs two more signings before the new season commences, and it seems he is looking for a defender and attacker.
United would need to raise the stakes and pay big money as Maguire’s price tag has increased following his fine performances for the three lions in Russia.
The Leicester man started every game for England apart from the 1-0 defeat to Belgium in the group stage. His performances were outstanding and he was arguably our best defender in a largely solid back three.
His performance in the quarter-final victory against Sweden was one that any defender would be proud of. He got the opening goal, completing another England set piece with a thumping header finding the bottom left corner of the net. He is also good at passing the ball forward, from his 415 passes at the World Cup, 380 were successful.
Before the tournament, Maguire had only 6 England caps to his name and was one of many players in the England team with little international experience.
He has now had the experience of reaching a world cup semi-final, with 12 caps for his country and scoring on the biggest stage.
Could Maguire push for a move that would have the whole world talking?
Why would Maguire suit Mourihno and United?
One could say United haven’t had a solid central defender since the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Eric Bailly has proved he can be a rock at the back, but has had a few injury problems. However, with the Dutchman back to full fitness for the start of the new season, everything seems to be looking up for United’s back line. However, Bailly can’t be United’s only solid central defender.
I’m sure United fans would agree that Chris Smalling can be quite unreliable, as can ex Blackburn defender Phil Jones. It’s got to the point where some fans have compared the two to the famous children’s television duo the Chuckle Brothers.
Harry Maguire, has proven to the country that he is more than worthy to maintain a spot in the defence of Southgate’s England team. Knocking off the likes of both Jones and Smalling to the position.
For quite a while, United have had defensive problems. David De Gea has had to save the team countless times due to defensive errors.
By now, Mourinho must be aware he needs someone who can build a brick wall at the back and stop United from those pathetic draws or losses with teams that, on paper, they should be beating.
Maguire would certainly be up for the challenge and could perhaps help Eric Bailly reach his full potential as well. Who knows, a new Ferdinand and Vidic-esque partnership could be on the cards.
Mourinho is also thinking of changing United’s style of play slightly. An opportunity for those in defence to support those further up the field perhaps? United need a new, fresh set of ideas going into the new season if they are to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and the big clubs in the Champions League.
In recent years, United have lacked aerial threat and that has caused them to drop points on various occasions. So, how do they solve this problem? A signing like Maguire may be the answer as he has shown he can be a threat in the air.
Why would Maguire pick United over the other clubs?
Harry Maguire could now be at one of his highest levels in his football career and many believe if he were to move to a bigger club then he could become world class.
Where better to go than a club with the highest amount of fans across the globe, a manager who has been successful on the biggest stage in club football and a team with several world class players?
The Red Devil’s are in dyer need of a new face at the back, whereas other top sides like Manchester City and Liverpool seem to have their defence in a steady position.
Maguire would more than likely get first team football as Mourinho is unlikely to start Smalling or Jones, as he is aware that both have defensive errors in their lockers.
It’s fair to say that Harry Maguire isn’t Barcelona or Real Madrid material yet, but he would certainly fit in at either United, City or Liverpool.
The perfect place for the England international to take his career to the next level could well be Old Trafford, but it remains to be seen if ‘The special one’ will make a move for the foxes defender.
